Coconut oil is very stable at high temperatures and the only vegetable oil I recommend cooking with.
In my previous newsletters I have shared some healthy yummy recipes but today's health tip is about a food type to avoid, vegetable oils. Most of us cook with vegetable oils such as canola oil, sun flower oil, safflower oil etc because that is what is considered normal and it is cheap convenient and available. Many of us also cook with olive oil. But cooking with these oils can be one of the most harmful things you can do for your health. These oils are very unstable at higher temperatures. They break down and become oxidized creating free radicals which are very unstable and react quickly with other cells in the body. Free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule, "stealing" its electron which in turn becomes a free radical itself and is also unstable, beginning a chain reaction of disrupted cells that compound to cause accelerated aging and disease.
Coconut oil, ghee and lard are stable at higher temperatures - up to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). These fats are the fats you want to be cooking with to limit the free radicals entering your body and breaking down the healthy cells in your body. I recommend cooking with coconut oil since it is stable at high temperatures and has many other added health benefits.
In my most recent newsletter I talked about the: how, what, when & why to eat for weight loss. https://sophiadrysdale.squarespace.com/subscribe/ This is at the 2013 No Gi World Championships when I was a new mother and still breast feeding. It can be done. It just takes discipline and knowledge.
2013 No Gi Worlds. Competing and a breastfeeding Mum. It can be done.

Winter Root vegetables are a great source of complex carbs because they contain fiber and antioxidants.
Before Winter is over make the most of the amazing Winter root vegetables that are so delicious and versatile. Here is a medley of roasted pumpkin, sweet potato and another sort of sweet potato called "Murasaki' Sweet potato. which have a purple skin and white flesh and they are super sweet!. These root veggies are a great source of complex carbs because they are high in potassium and fiber. They are also high in zeaxanthin and carotenoids, antioxidants that protect against cancer and are good for the eyes too.
Roast Winter Vegetables Recipe:
Chop up a whole bunch of the root vegetables, place in a pan, toss little bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and all purpose seasoning and roast on 400 degrees F (195 degrees C) for about 40- 45 minutes. Easy!
For those who haven't subscribed and have missed out on my newsletters, here is a little piece I wrote about water and chronic dehydration from my most recent newsletter...
One of the key factors for fat loss is water. Pretty much every biological function in the body requires water and that included breaking down your food an using it for energy. Most people don't drink enough, especially if they train a lot or work out. In fact some people are chronically dehydrated and they attribute their poor digestion, lethargy, headaches, dry skin and big bags under the eyes, muscle cramps and aches and pains and swelling to other factors. The worst thing you can do is start off the day by drinking a coffee on your way to work with no water and a some crappy processed breakfast cereal. During sleep you lose a minimum of a pound (1/2 Kg) every night through your breath, sweat and your biological processes and that is not even including the fluid lost by getting up in the middle of the night to pee. You almost always wake up dehydrated and it is further compounded by drinking coffee and then a carb filled, dry snack which pulls even more water from your body in order to digest. Start the day by drinking between 1 - 2 cups (1/4 to 1/2 L) of water every morning before a decent breakfast (and of course your one daily coffee yes, only one, wink) and carry a water bottle around with you all day.
Water, essential to all life, essential for weight loss.
My article has just been published in Whole Life Challenge magazine. This little piece is all about motherhood and making time for yourself and the things you love, including BJJ. Motherhood is not what defines us as women, it is only a part of being a woman and it is important that we speak up, reach out and ask for help to make time to continue doing what we do in all our awesomeness in addition to being a mum!
Thank you Whole Life Challenge for publishing my article.
