Winter vegetables, a great source of complex carbs

Winter Root vegetables are a great source of complex carbs because they contain fiber and antioxidants.

Winter Root vegetables are a great source of complex carbs because they contain fiber and antioxidants.

Before Winter is over make the most of the amazing Winter root vegetables that are so delicious and versatile. Here is a medley of roasted pumpkin, sweet potato and another sort of sweet potato called "Murasaki' Sweet potato. which have a purple skin and white flesh and they are super sweet!. These root veggies are a great source of complex carbs because they are high in potassium and fiber. They are also high in zeaxanthin and carotenoids, antioxidants that protect against cancer and are good for the eyes too.

Roast Winter Vegetables Recipe:

Chop up a whole bunch of the root vegetables, place in a pan, toss little bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and all purpose seasoning and roast on 400 degrees F (195 degrees C) for about 40- 45 minutes. Easy!

Chronic dehydration and it's impact on weight loss

For those who haven't subscribed and have missed out on my newsletters, here is  a little piece I wrote about water and chronic dehydration from my most recent newsletter...

One of the key factors for fat loss is water.  Pretty much every biological function in the body requires water and that included breaking down your food an using it for energy. Most people don't drink enough, especially if they train a lot or work out. In fact some people are chronically dehydrated and they attribute their poor digestion, lethargy, headaches, dry skin and big bags under the eyes, muscle cramps and aches and pains and swelling to other factors.
The worst thing you can do is start off the day by drinking a coffee on your way to work with no water and a some crappy processed breakfast cereal.  During sleep you lose a minimum of a pound (1/2 Kg) every night through your breath, sweat and your biological processes and that is not even including the fluid lost by getting up in the middle of the night to pee. You almost always wake up dehydrated and it is further compounded by drinking coffee and then a carb filled, dry snack which pulls even more water from your body in order to digest.
Start the day by drinking between  1 - 2 cups (1/4 to 1/2 L)  of water every morning before a decent breakfast  (and of course your one daily coffee yes, only one, wink) and carry a water bottle around with you all day.

Putting Mom first, how to be a healthy happy new mother

My article has just been published in Whole Life Challenge magazine. This little piece is all about motherhood and making time for yourself and the things you love, including BJJ. Motherhood is not what defines us as women, it is only a part of being a woman and it is important that we speak up, reach out and ask for help to make time to continue doing what we do in all our awesomeness in addition to being a mum!

Thank you Whole Life Challenge for publishing my article.

Take your baby to BJJ class. There is no reason why new mum's should stay at home.

Eggs...How these little guys get such a bad wrap.

Eggs... It amazes me how these little guys get such a bad wrap. In my nutrition e book I uncover a lot of misconceptions and eggs are one of them. Everyone thinks that you can only eat the egg whites. This came about because of a) the body building industry and b) because of the big scare on fats and cholesterol. Put simply you only eat egg whites if you are a weeks out from a body building show where you have to be under 5% body fat. Keep in mind that these athletes don't maintain that level of leanness. It is only temporary. And the cholesterol found in natural foods such as eggs and seafood do not adversely affect your health like previously though. Processed, refined white carbohydrates play a much more significant role in elevating your LDL cholesterol levels. So next time eat the whole egg- full of all your fat soluble vitamins, A,D,E & K.
